Everybody can learn. This simple statement is what Conductive Education is based on. Giving the opportunity and support to develop and learn new skills, regain skills what Conductive Education is about.

Conductive Education (CE) is a holistic approach to help people with neurological conditions, such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, stroke, head- and spine injuries. It is a life-long learning system, which is about the active learning and interaction between the "conductor" and the individual. CE is based on neuroplasticity which means that the brain is able to create new pathways to function with targeted, active learning.

CE is an educational approach to help people with movements, posture, coordination, as well as problem solving, motor planning, and practical self-care skills, communication and social interaction.

Conductive Education has been developed in Hungary by Dr Andras Peto, a Hungarian doctor, physician. He designed CE as a structure that incorporated education, therapy and academic learning into one comprehensive approach.

It works best in GROUPs to encourage the individuals to help and learn from each other, motivate, learn social interaction skills.

The "conductor" will set achievable goals for each individual and create a program with task series which is tasks broken down into small steps to facilitate each individual to succeed. The tasks and programs help to learn routines and practice learnt skills in everyday challenges.

Facilitation is key in CE as this will allow and support each individual to find their own ways to achieve success. Facilitation can be verbal prompting, environmental (specialized equipment), phycological (encouragement, motivation) or manual help adjusted to the right level for each and everyone of the group. Facilitation and tasks are differentiated throughout the sessions to suit everyone's goals.

Rhythmical intention is the simple, repetitive language which supports each task and activity throughout the CE program. It breaks down the tasks into simple instructions to help the individuals to plan the movement. Rhythmical intention also gives them the rhythm and time to complete a movement.

Observation is also a key which allows the conductor to set the right goals, programs and tasks and choose the right facilitation throughout the sessions.

Everyone can learn. The conductor will observe what the individual can do and help to learn further skills and find ways to achieve their highest potentials, independence in life.

Who can benefit from CE?

To find out whether CE can help you or your loved one, send your enquiry to info@abiliteaplace.co.uk to book a free assessment.

An initial assessment is a great opportunity to find out more about CE, more specifically for your questions. It is also an important first step where the conductor will ask many questions to find out about the individual you enquire for, as well as will complete a physical assessment. This will include to look at different positions, assess muscle tones and posture, coordination, fine-motor skills, communication and maybe a few problem-solving challenges (at an age-appropriate level).

At the end of the assessment the conductor will tell if CE will most likely benefit your child/you and will also recommend what goals to work towards if commit to CE.

On the assessment the conductor will discuss with you whether a group or an individual session will be offered and talk about how a CE session looks like.
